We do not play on Graves —
Because there is'nt Room —
Besides — it is'nt even — it slants
And People come —
And put a Flower on it —
And hang their faces so —
We're fearing that their Hearts will drop —
And crush our pretty play —
And so we move as far
As Enemies — away —
Just looking round to see how far

Emily Dickinson
Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) was born in Amherst, Massachusetts. It is estimated that Emily wrote over 1700 poems but only several poems of them were published during her lifetime. She withdrew from social contact at the middle of her twenties and was devoted to write. She sent her poetry to Thomas Wentworth Higginson, one of her very few acquaintances, but he rejected them. Nevertheless he was the one who eventually published her poems in 1890 for the first publication after she died.
In her writing she frequently used dashes, sporadic capitalization of nouns, off-rhymes, broken meter, unconventional metaphors, and they have had considerable influence on modern poetry.
