* The lyrics above are from "Four Songs for Voice and Piano" (Op. 12 / 1915-1917) composed by Anton Webern (1883-1945), an Austrian composer.
Hans Bethge (1876-1946): A German translator and a poet known for the translation of the lyrics of "Das Lied von der Erde" composed by Gustav Mahler. In the latter half of 19th century the poems of Tang Dynasty were very popular in Europe. Bethge translated many Chinese poems written by Li-Tai-Po and Tu Fu into German.
Li-Tai-Po (701-762): He is one of the three most famous poets in the Tang dynasty (618-907) as well as Wang Wei and Tu Fu. Most of his life still remains unknown and there are only a few references about him since he went on wandering half of his life. He often wrote about the moon in his poems and it is said that he drowned trying to catch the moon's reflection in the water while being drunk.
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) : German poet, novelist, playwright and natural philosopher. His well-known works are "The Sorrows of Young Werther" (novel) and "Faust" (poetic drama).

The mysterious flute
One evening, when flowers were wafting their scents
and all the leaves were on the trees, the wind brought to me
the song of a far-off flute. Immediately I cut
a branch from the willow, and
my song flew to give answer through the blossoming night.
Ever since that evening, when the earth is sleeping,
the birds hear conversations in their language.

＊この二つの詩は、アントン・ウェーベルンの歌曲 Op. 12 「声とピアノのための四つの歌／Four Songs for Voice and Piano」（1915-1917）の第２曲と第４曲に使われているものです。ウェーベルン（1883-1945）は、12音技法で知られるシェーンベルクの弟子で、新ウィーン楽派の一人とされるオーストリアの作曲家。

ハンス・ベートゲ(1876-1946)：マーラーの「大地の歌」の訳詩で知られるドイツの翻訳家、詩人。19世紀後半のヨーロッパでは、杜甫、李白などの唐代の詩がもてはやされており、ベートゲは漢詩から喚起されたイメージをかなり自由にドイツ語に置き換えて、創作に近い訳詩にしている。
李太白（701-762）：杜甫とともに知られる唐代の詩人。李白は人生の半分を漂泊の旅に費やし、官職につくこともなかったため資料もあまりなく、生地を含め生涯の大半が謎のままであるという。何かにつけ月を詠んだそうで、死因は酒に酔って水中の月をとらえようとしての溺死とも言われているそう。
ヨハン・ヴォルフガング・ゲーテ(1749-1832) ：1800年前後にドイツで最も影響力のあった詩人、小説家、学者。小説「若きウェルテルの悩み」、詩劇「ファウスト」などで知られる。
