アメリカのスケーターたちが底の丸いプールを滑るビデオを、いままでに何度も見てはいたが、彼らがどんな気持ちでいるのかは想像がつかないし、共有できないでいた。なぜなら底の丸いプールは日本にはないからだ。何年もスケートボードと関わっているのに、プールスケーティングについては何も知らなかった。ただの古くさいスケートのやり方のひとつとしか思っていなかった。しかし、スティーヴ・アルバというプール・スケーターに会って、僕の考えは一変した。彼のプールに対する情熱は僕の想像をはるかに超えているものだった。とにかくプールで滑るまでのプロセスが並み大抵ではない。彼は新しいプールに出逢うためにセスナで上空からたびたび調査をする。裏庭にあるプールは地上からでは発見しずらいからだ。たとえ空のプールを発見したとしても、こんどは隣近所の様子を観察しなくてはならない。隣人がすぐに警察に通報するような「善良」な市民では困るのだ。そうやって、やっと滑ることができたとしても短時間できりあげることがほとんどだ。この一連の流れこそがプールスケーティングだったのである。知らなかった。体験してみた。すごく胸騒ぎがした。彼が連れていってくれた水のないプールには、僕が好きなアメリカと僕が哀れむアメリカの景色が混在していた。カリフォルニアの白い光に照らされた乾いたプールはひとまず息を飲んでカメラも持たずに眺めてしまうほど美しく、しかし、どこか悲しさも秘めていた。僕らが最初に行ったプールの隣の家の住人のおばさんは、午前中にもかかわらず既に酔っぱらっていた。あるところは注射器が散乱し、またあるところは犯罪が起き現場検証のために争った跡がそのままのこっている家のプールだった。スケートができるプールといえば、そんなふうに人から見放された家のものばかりだ。そんな見放された景色の中で滑るスケーターたちはひと筋の光にも見える。彼らの発想の転換とそれを実行してしまう行動力は実にシャレていると思う。物心ついた頃からスケートボードに親しんできた僕は、いまだにスケートボードに魅了されている理由がハッキリとは分らない。それはまるで自分のアイデンティティが分らないのと似ている。だけどプールの風景に出逢って、答がココにあるかもしれないと思い始めている。美しくて悲しい風景のなかに、ひと筋のウィール（タイヤ）が通った跡。そんな風景が僕にとっては妙に納得がいく答えになってしまう。

アメリカでもプール付きの物件はカリフォルニア州、アリゾナ州、ネヴァダ州など、ウェストコーストに多く集中している。１９５０年、アメリカ政府は第二次世界大戦が終わり戦争から戻ってきたGIのために、都心部から少し離れた場所にプ−ル付きの家を用意した。それと、当時アメリカンドリームを叶え富を得た人たちの間でも、広い土地を求めて郊外にプール付き豪邸を建てるのが流行る。７０年初頭、大干ばつのあった年にスケーターはプールと出会う。プールの丸い底を波に見立ててて滑った事でプール・スケーティングは始った。水すら与えられずに人に見放されたプールに、新しい可能性が生まれた瞬間である。目的とはまったく違う使い方をするスケーターには、プールに対する独特な見解がある。５０年代以前のプールは大きくて良いが、４０年、３０年代のプールは路面が悪い。６０年代以降はサイズが小さく滑りにくい。プールはその家の庭や地形に合わせて設計し作るために、一つとして同じ形はないし、プールを作る会社によってもシェイプや丸みの加減が変わってくるのだ。グラインドをかけるには、アンソニ−製のプールがコーピング（プールの縁の部分）が大きくて安定する。ベーカー製のプールはヴァーティカルが長く、少しチャレンジングだ。シャロー（プールの浅い方）、路面、コーピング、アールの角度など統合するとブルーヘヴン社のプールがダントツ人気になる。５０年代に豪邸を建てた人たちは、ある時突然、自分の近所に違う人種の人たちが越してきたのでその土地を離れてしまった。そうして管理がきちんとされなくなった住宅地は、たちまち治安の悪い場所になる。土地の値段も急激に安くなり、低収入の人たちの住む街にかわった。貧しい人たちは庭にプールがあっても水を張る余裕はない。そんな地域では、水のないプールを見つけることができるのだ。塀から裏庭を覗いて芝生が黄色ければ、庭の手入れをしていない家だとわかるし、プールに水が入っていない可能性が高い。「貸家」や「売り出し中」のサインがある家もねらい目だ。こうしてありつけたプールでも、常に周りや警察などに気を使わなければならない。大抵、プールの寿命は数週間。スケーターに大切にされたプールは、時には何年も滑れるところもあるが。長居は禁物で適度に滑ったらさっとその場を離れる。そして次のプールへ…。こうしてプールスケーティングは終わりのない旅となるのだ。

I have seen skateboarders skating the round bottoms of swimming pools on video many times. Yet I could neither imagine their feelings nor share their experience, as there are no round-bottomed pools in Japan.
Despite many years in skateboarding, I didn't know anything about pool skating I thought it might be just another old way of skating, but meeting a pool skater by the name of Steve Alba changed my perspective.
His passion for skateboarding pools was beyond my imagination. The process of getting to skateboard in pools is just unbelievable. These days he searches for new pools by Cessna from above, because they are hard to find from the ground, as they are usually in the backyards. When a new pool has been found the next tasks is to observe the neighborhood. You wouldn't want a "goody-goody" neighbor who has to report everything to the police. Even after having going through such a hectic process, sometimes you cannot even stay that long.
These series of experiences are indeed what defines pool skating. I had no idea what it was like, but I experienced it and I felt the rush. In the empty pools that he took me to, I saw the America I like and the America I pity. The dried up pools under the white California sun was so breathtaking that I just had to gaze, without even holding a camera.
Still, the empty pools concealed a certain sadness. Where we first visited, a lady in the neighboring house was already drunk, even though it was still in the morning. Some places had syringes scattered everywhere. In another house with an empty pool, there were still traces from a crime scene investigation. Pools where you can skate are usually at houses that have been abandoned. The skateboarders in such abandoned places are like a ray of light. I find it very sleek how they look at ideas from a different angle and put it into action.
For as long as I can remember, there's always a skateboard next to me, but I still have not figured out why I am so attracted to it. That's almost like not understanding one's identity. Nevertheless, ever since I discovered the landscape of pools, I gradually started to feel that the answer to my search is here.
Wheels have left their traces in the beautiful and sad landscape. Such a landscape surprisingly makes sense to me.

Journey of Pool Taku Takemura
In America, a lot of the houses with a swimming pool are seen in the states like California, Arizona and Nevada. In 1950, American government provided GIs, who came back from the World War II, with the house with a pool in the suburbs not too far from the city. Around the same time, people who lived the American Dream and made fortune searched for a big land and built their house with a pool in the suburbs one after another.
In the early 70s, skateboarders meet pool skating in a drought year. Pool skating begins as skateboarders skated the round-bottomed pool as if it were waves of ocean. It was the moment the new life was breathed into pools that had been abandoned for many years without being filled up with water. Pool skaters have their own unique perspective toward pool. Pools built before 50s are bigger but those in 30s and 40s have rough surface. Pools built after 60s are comparatively small. No pools have the same shape as they are built to fit to each backyard of the houses or its land features. By the same token, the shape or the roundness of each pool differs depending on the builder. Anthony's are good for grind because its coping is big and makes it more stable. Baker's are a bit more challenging for their long vertical. No pools can beat Blue Haven's for its total balance in shallow (shallow area of pool), surface, coping, and transition.
Many people who built their multimillion houses in 50s begin moving out as the different type of people move into their neighborhood. This caused a lot of houses to be left poor-managed and eventually created poor neighborhood. Many low-income people started moving into the neighborhood as the land price dropped sharply. Those people cannot afford to fill their pools and therefore a lot of the empty pools are found in such areas. If you poke your head over the fence and see that the lawn is yellow, you can tell that the people live there don't take care of their backyard and the chances are that their pools are empty. You might want to check out the houses with for rent or sale sign. Even if you have the luck to find the empty pools, you always need to watch out for your back in case police finds you trespassing. Majority of pools only last for a couple of weeks but pools that are taken care of skateboarders could even last for years. Shouldn't stay too long at one place. After you had good sessions, go find another empty pool and pool skating becomes an endless journey.
