I am the escaped one
I am the escaped one,
After I was born
They locked me up inside me
But I left.
My soul seeks me,
Through hills and valley,
I hope my soul
Never finds me.
Alentejo seen from the train
Nothing with nothing around it
And a few trees in between
None of which very clearly green,
Where no river or flower pays a visit.
If there be a hell, I've found it,
For if ain't here, where the Devil it is?
Fernando Pessoa
A famous peot in Portugal. He was born in Lisbon in 1888 and died there in 1935. When he was five years old his father died of illness, and as his mother got married to a Portuguese consul in South Africa he moved to Durban, South Africa. He studied there and had an English education until he graduated from high school. He returned Portugal after that to go to university, but he actually didn't. His works had not been published except a small book about Portuguese mysterious history during his lifetime. An Italian author, Antonio Tabucchi, admired him for his great works and he wrote about him in his novel whose titile is "Gli ultimi tre giorni di Fernando Pessoa." (the last three days of Fernando Pessoa)
