	it is evening in the mid forties my mother is ironing clothes in the kitchen somewhere the world is burning a warm iron pressing cotton is a balm grandfather folds the evening paper places it on the arm of his overstuffed chair stares out the window toward the driveway or beyond to dark coal pits or oceans the radio plays Jack Smith's music my mother sets the iron on end pulls me up onto her lap her flowered print apron beautiful as any Monet she unwrinkles the paper holds the comic page in front of us and reads + Jack Smith: A singer who had a popular 15 minute radio show in the late 1940s to early 1950s. John E. McGuigan He is a retired secondary school teacher with thirty-four years experience teaching creative writing and television production in New York and Pennsylvania. His first collection of poetry, A Wonderment of Seasons was published in 1969. He is a poet with the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts Artists in Education program and has served as artist-in-residence in more than fifty schools around the state. 		それは1940年代半ばの　夕方のこと 母さんは　キッチンで　アイロンがけをしており 世界のどこかが　燃えているらしかった 木綿の服から立ち昇る　温かな　蒸気のにおい おじいちゃんは　夕刊をたたみ すわっていた布張り椅子のひじかけに　それを置いて 窓の外のドライブウェイの方を　じっと見ている その先の黒っぽい炭坑場か、彼方の海だったかもしれない ラジオでは　ジャック・スミスの音楽が鳴っていた 母さんはアイロンを切ると ぼくをひざの上に引き寄せた その花模様のエプロンは　モネの絵みたいにきれいだった 母さんは　新聞を手にとって 漫画のページをひらくと　声を出して読みはじめた + ジャック・スミス：1940年代後半から1950年代初めにかけて、15分の人気ラジオ・ショー番組をやっていたアメリカの歌手。 （だいこくかずえ 訳） ジョン・E・マグィーガン ジョン・E・マグィーガンは元ハイスクールの教師で、ニューヨークとペンシルバニアで34年間にわたりクリエイティブ・ライティングとテレビ制作を教えてきました。最初の詩集「A Wonderment of Seasons」は1969年に出版されています。 ジョンはまたペンシルバニア・カウンシル（教育プログラムのアーティスト部門）の詩人として活動し、州内の50校を越える学校でアーチスト・イン・レジデンスとして詩を教えています。 掲載の詩は、ジョン・E・マグィーガン著「Part of a Geography: Gilbert Street」（2003年２月、paper kite pressより出版）の中の一篇です。 Copyright 2003 by John E.
