LOTUS SEED
drowsy in the spring sunlight
having cast my vote
for a democratic system,
I look out at the salsa jar
where three lotus seeds
rest at the bottom like
dark hazelnuts. A layer
of white scum has gathered
at the top, but I hope
one day the black will burst
and the stem of a pink lotus
will emerge out of
the murk and the slime.
