メアリー・オースティン
アメリカ、イリノイ州出身の作家、ナチュラリスト（1868〜1934年）。カリフォルニア州南部の沙漠地帯に長く暮らし、そこで観察したこと体験したことを小説、エッセイ、詩集、童話などの題材とし、多くの作品を生み出した。シエラ・ネヴァダの東斜面に沿って細くのびる谷間、オーウェンズ・ヴァレーの小さな町を転々とし、この土地特有の野生のありよう（動植物、地形、気候風土など）に親しみ、そこで暮らすインディアンの人々や鉱夫、羊飼いたちと深く親交することで多くのことを学んだという。その成果は、この地域のアメリカ・インディアンの詩を集めて英訳、解説した「American Rhythm」（1923年）や、羊飼いの生き方を綴ったエッセイ集「The Flock」（1906年）などに結晶している。「雨の降らない土地」（1903年）はオースティンのもっともよく知られる作品で、アメリカでは今もペイパーバックが複数の出版社から出ているが、特記すべき版として、親交のあったアンセル・アダムスが48枚の写真と言葉を寄せているHoughton Mifflin版（1950年）は興味深い。日本語で読めるオースティンの作品として、「籠女」（2004年）、「シカ星／アメリカ・インディアンはうたう」（2005年）がある。1924年、オースティンはニュー・メキシコ州サンタ・フェに移り住み、この地域特有の日干しレンガの家アドービで残りの生涯を暮らした。
Mary Hunter Austin
A writer and naturalist born in Carlinville, Illinois (1868 – 1934). She lived in the desert, the south of California for many years, and she wrote about what she observed and experienced there in her novels, essays, poems, children’s books, etc. While she was living in Owens Valley which is a small valley along the east slope of Sierra Nevada she moved from one small town to another, and learned much about the wilderness, wild life, plans and weather of this area, and got familiar with Indians, shepherds and miners who lived there. What she learned from them (both nature and people of the land) appears in, for instance, “American Rhythm” (1923) in which she collected, translated and explicated American Indians poems of this area, or “The Flock” (1906) which is a collection of essays about the shepherds and their way of life. The most well-known of her work is “The Land of Little Rain” (1903), and the paperbacks thereof are still published by various American publishers, but the most interesting one among them is the Houghton Mifflin edition (1950), which has 48 photographs of the area taken by Ansel Adams, who was an acquaintance of Austin’s, and his notes about the land. In 1924 Austin moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico, and lived in her treasured adobe house until her death.
