Sea
by Sansei Yamao
translated by Alex Jones

The sea,
Is home to each of us,
We were born from the sea, and we will return to the sea.

Four-point-six billion years ago,
The solar system was formed, and with it, the earth.
And four-point-six billion years ago,
The earth retained water; the only planet in the solar system to have an ocean.

Fourteen million years ago, around the early Tertiary era,
Yakushima(*) began to heave up from the bottom of this ocean.
And ten-thousand years ago,
Yakushima had all but settled into its present form.

Six thousand years ago,
The first inhabitants of Yakushima,
Were already living merrily on its shores,
Praying to the setting sun,
And worshipping the rising sun,
But I wonder if six thousand years from now,
Its future inhabitants,
Will live just as happily?

The sea,
Is home to each of us,
We were born from the sea, and we will forever return to the sea.

(*)Yakushima is an island in southern Japan famous for a uniquely preserved
ancient forest. The poet lived there for over 20 years until he died in 2001.
