Marek Lugowski, 41, is a Polish-born Poland/US-educated American poet and translator and works at a university as an educational programmer in Java for a living.

Marek is the president and editor of A Small Garlic Press, a 501(c)(3)Nonprofit Corporation run out of Chicago by him and several volunteers across the internet. ASGP publishes poetry chapbooks and maintains an extensive website. He is also the co-editor (with katrina grace craig) of Agnieszka's Dowry (AgD) ISSN 1088-4300, ASGP's poetry serial.

After graduating from Northern Kentucky University in 1982 with a BS in physics, math and computing science, Marek went on to study computer science in graduate school at Indiana University, which included work with Douglas Hofstadter on literary translation as well as analogy-making, both at Indiana and at MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. After finishing his MS in 1984, he later pursued post-graduate work towards but did not obtain his doctorate. His fields of study and professional employment included artificial intelligence, artificial life and neural networks, and he worked at the University of New Hampshire, in untethered underwater robotics, and at Texas Instruments, in artificial intelligence and neural networks. He also had the distinction of presenting at and publishing in the book resulting from the first artificial life workshop held at LosAlamos in 1987.

For the past 8 years he has been programming in the Learning Sciences at Northwestern University. He currently works at the School of Education and Social Policy, building prototype applications in Java,which use network solutions and interfaces for schoolkids using various computers in classroom settings.

When not at work, Marek spends too much of his time on Usenet's rec.arts.poems getting into polemics and poetics, translating Halina Poswiatowska's entire poetry canon (a task at which he has been now for 10 years and is 2/3 done), at the cost of not doing as much travelling and camping as he would like, his major passions.
