Cosmic Haiku

In the first year of the 21st Century, on February 27th 2001 several haiku by John Sandbach were sent to me by e-mail from the USA. These haiku were contributions to the "World Haiku Gallery" page of "Ginyu", a haiku magazine I publish.

I was attracted to these haiku, which are spacious and cosmic, unlike so many stereotypical Japanese haiku.

Later I received a request by e-mail from a stranger in Japan who asked me to write an introduction to a book of Sandbach's haiku.
In one of these haiku Sandbach writes,

falling asleep
I see them --
caves on the moon

The poet seems to fall asleep peacefully, imagining the surface of the moon.
In another haiku he writes,

to be polite
moon withdraws
as we speak

Maybe the moon is one of his friends.

I don't know if Sandbach is his real name. "Sand" means sandhill in both English and German, and "bach" means stream in German.

I imagine Sandbach to be a haijin (haiku poet) who lives in a cosmic world of poetry, and who calls the moon to the dry wash scattered with sand in the middle of North America so that he may talk with her.

宇宙感覚の俳句

21世紀最初の年、2001年２月27日、アメリカから、ジョン・サンドバックの俳句が、突然メールで送られてきた。私が発行人をつとめる「吟遊」という俳句雑誌の、世界俳句ギャラリーというページへの掲載を求めてのメールだった。

超マンネリ化した日本の俳句とはちがい、どこかひろびろとした宇宙感覚が光る魅力的な作品だった。

サンドバックの俳句を句集にして出版するので、その紹介文を書いてほしいとの依頼もまた、突然、今度は日本国内からメールでやって来た。

　　眠り落ちる
　　目に
　　月の　穴　穴　穴

サンドバックは、月面を想像しながら、安らかに入眠するらしい。

　　礼儀正しく
　　月は　姿　消す
　　ぼくたちの　おしゃべりの間

いや月は、サンドバックの友人のひとりなのである。

そう言えば、彼のサンドバックという名前が、本名なのかどうかも知らない。サンドは英語で「砂」、バックはドイツ語で「小川」という意味だ。

きっと彼は、アメリカ大陸のまんなかの、かわいた砂だらけの小川に、月を招いて語りあう、宇宙的ポエジーの俳人なのだろう。
